Grace College Welcomes Author Dr. Miranda Zapor Cruz

The Grace College Office of Faith, Learning, & Scholarship welcomes Dr. Miranda Zapor Cruz, author of the new book, “Faithful Politics: Ten Approaches to Christian Citizenship and Why it Matters.” Cruz will discuss her book as a part of Grace’s Lyceum Lecture series on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. The free event is open to the public and will take place in Westminster Hall, 105 9th St., Winona Lake. Light refreshments will be served.

“We are grateful to have Dr. Cruz with us,” said Dr. Jared Burkholder, interim director of the Office of Faith, Learning, & Scholarship.  “Her book is a breath of fresh air. Politics is usually a divisive topic, but Dr. Cruz offers a neutral and thoroughly Christian overview of approaches to being engaged citizens in a polarized world.”

Cruz serves as the chair of the School of Theology and Ministry at Indiana Wesleyan University. She also teaches theology and church history, focusing on the practical application of Christian doctrine in life and ministry. Cruz holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion, Politics, and Society from Baylor University, an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and a BA in Religion from Whitworth University.

In her book, “Faithful Politics,” Cruz guides readers in forming a vision of citizenship that brings Christian convictions into political engagement while avoiding common pitfalls. Cruz provides a measured, nonpartisan overview of how Christians have approached political participation.

She discusses ten views representing a range of theological approaches to the relationship between the kingdom of God and the country. Cruz describes the strengths and weaknesses of each view, with a focus on Christian faithfulness.

“Faithful Politics” aims to help Christians learn from the past to discern how to be salt and light in this time and place. Cruz challenges readers to allow principles from Scripture and theology to inform their thinking and remind them that their ultimate citizenship is in the kingdom of God.

Copies of Cruz’s book, “Faithful Politics: Ten Approaches to Christian Citizenship and Why it Matters,” will be available for purchase and signing at the event. To learn more about Cruz’s work and read her full biography, go to www.indwes.edu/academics/faculty/miranda-cruz.
