The Teacher as Moral Practitioner

In the School of Education, we embrace the ideology that “Teaching must be characterized as a career deeply influenced by moral practice” (Fenstermacher, in Goodlad, et. al). That’s why we are deeply concerned about instilling the principles of character, competence, and service into our future teachers. Here’s the way we do it:

Character
Every day in the classroom, teachers are faced with decisions of deliberation and choice. Our courses engage in conversation with this in mind. What is the role of a teacher’s character and how does it affect students?

Competence
We pride ourselves in being excellent. The School of Education requires more than 100 hours of classroom experience starting as soon as your first semester—and that’s prior to a full semester of student teaching! We do everything in our control to ensure you graduate a top-notch candidate.

Service
Teachers must have a spirit of community and a willingness to serve. We want you to leave inspired, approaching your career with an eagerness to love others and glorify God.

Micah 6:8
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
